Smokey Old Fashioned

Smokey Old Fashioned

The Old Fashioned is a classic cocktail believed to have originated in Louisville, Kentucky. It is a whiskey-based drink with bitters, simple syrup, and fruit. The drink is typically served garnished with an orange peel and a maraschino cherry

Ingredients

  • 1 teaspoon sugar (or 1 sugar cube or 2 teaspoons simple syrup)
  • 2 dashes of Angostura bitters (or the bitters of your choice)
  • 1 teaspoon water
  • 1.5 to 2 ounces bourbon (or rye whiskey, if preferred)
  • Garnish: orange twist or slice
  • Garnish: Maraschino cherry (optional)

Instructions

  1. Add the sugar and bitters into a mixing glass, then add the water and stir until the sugar is nearly dissolved.
  2. Fill the mixing glass with ice, add the bourbon, and stir until well-chilled.
  3. Strain into a glass over one large ice cube.
  4. Express the oil of an orange twist over the glass, then drop it into the glass as a garnish. If using maraschino cherry, add it to the glass, too.
  5. Set the cocktail smoker on top of the glass and add the wood chips to the smoker.
  6. Use the kitchen torch to light the wood chips, add the desired amount of smoke, and slide the smoker over to seal the glass.
  7. Allow the smoke inside the glass until the desired smokiness is reached.
  8. Remove the smoker from the serving glass, add the brûléed lime to the rim, and serve.
