The Old Fashioned is a classic cocktail believed to have originated in Louisville, Kentucky. It is a whiskey-based drink with bitters, simple syrup, and fruit. The drink is typically served garnished with an orange peel and a maraschino cherry
Ingredients
- 1 teaspoon sugar (or 1 sugar cube or 2 teaspoons simple syrup)
- 2 dashes of Angostura bitters (or the bitters of your choice)
- 1 teaspoon water
- 1.5 to 2 ounces bourbon (or rye whiskey, if preferred)
- Garnish: orange twist or slice
- Garnish: Maraschino cherry (optional)
Instructions
- Add the sugar and bitters into a mixing glass, then add the water and stir until the sugar is nearly dissolved.
- Fill the mixing glass with ice, add the bourbon, and stir until well-chilled.
- Strain into a glass over one large ice cube.
- Express the oil of an orange twist over the glass, then drop it into the glass as a garnish. If using maraschino cherry, add it to the glass, too.
- Set the cocktail smoker on top of the glass and add the wood chips to the smoker.
-
Use the kitchen torch to light the wood chips, add the desired amount of smoke, and slide the smoker over to seal the glass.
- Allow the smoke inside the glass until the desired smokiness is reached.
- Remove the smoker from the serving glass, add the brûléed lime to the rim, and serve.
